Saint Luke's Hospital

St. Luke's Hospital is a private hospital which provides much of the subspecialty training in our program. It is a major hospital in the city with 490 beds and an internationally known Cardiovascular Department. The Orthopaedic Department has 14 clinical staff predominately associated with the Dickson-Diveley Midwest Orthopaedic Clinic. This clinic has a long history in Kansas City. Dr. Dickson and Diveley were both presidents of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and were the original founders of this training program.

bulletTimothy M. Badwey, MD, Clinical Professor and Associate Program Director

A graduate of Tulane Medical School, Dr. Badwey completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Kansas-Wichita in 1992.  He then went on to complete a fellowship in foot surgery at the Campbell Clinic in 1993 when he came to Kansas City.  He is board certified  by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

bulletCris D. Barnthouse, MD, Clinical Asst. Professor

A graduate of University of Kansas Medical School, Dr. Barnthouse completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 1986.  He then went on to complete a fellowship in sports medicine at Massachusetts General in 1987 when he returned to Kansas City.  He is board certified  by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.  He is the Co-Director of uouir sports medicine fellowship.

Mark Bernhardt, MD, Clinical Professor      

A 1983 graduate of the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Dr. Bernhardt did his orthopaedic training at the University of Kansas - Wichita and his spine fellowship at Harvard Medical School/Beth Israel Hospital completing in 1989. He heads our spine service teaching panel at Saint Lukes's.  He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Stanley A. Bowling, MD, Clinical Asst. Professor

Dr. Bowling received his MD from the University of Kansas in 1994 and completed his orthoapedic residency at the Creighton/Nebraska program.

Jon E. Browne, MD, Clinical Assoc. Professor

Dr. Browne   received his MD from the University of Missouri, Columbia, in 1972 and completed his orthoapedic residency at the Baylor College of Medicine in 1976. He did a fellowship with Dr. Slocum at the University of Oregon before coming to Kansas City. He is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.  He is the team physician for the Kansas City Chiefs and is the Director of our Sports Medicine Fellowship

Dale E. Darnell, MD, Clinical Professor                

After he completed his medical training at the University of Kansas, Dr. Darnell went on to do his orthopaedic training at Baylor College of Medicine.  He then joined the staff at Saint Luke's in 1971.  He is board certified  by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Brian J. Divelbiss, MD, Clinical Asst. Professor

After receiving his MD from the University of Iowa in 1991, he served in the U.S. Army at Fort Riley, KS. Dr. Divelbiss then went to the Allegheny General Orthopaedic Program in Pittsburgh, PA for his orthopaedic training,  followed by a hand and upper extremity fellowship at Iowa.

Robert C. Gardiner, MD, Clinical Assoc. Professor          

A graduate of University of Kansas School of Medicine, Dr. Gardiner completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1991.  He then did a fellowship in joint arthroplasty at Thomas Jefferson University, after which he returned to Kansas City and Saint Luke's Hospital.  He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Dan M. Gurba, MD, Clinical Assoc. Professor        

Having completed his medical training at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Dr. Gurba went on to do his orthopaedic training at the University of Missouri - Kansas City. He then continued with his training by doing a Joint Reconstruction Fellowship at the Rothman Institute in Philadelphia. He heads our joint service teaching panel at St. Lukes's. He joined the staff at Saint Luke's in 1985. He is board certified  by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Lowry Jones, Jr., MD, Clinical Professor  

After receiving his MD from the University of Kansas, Dr. Jones completed an orthopaedic residency at the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 1985. He heads our senior resident teaching panel at Saint Lukes's Hospital.  He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.  He serves on the AAOS Board of Directors, is Chairman of the AAOS Board of Councilors and is a past President of the Missouri State Orthopaedic Association.

Steven T. Joyce, MD, Clinical Assoc. Professor     

Dr. Joyce received his MD from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1973 and completed his orthopaedic training at University of Missouri Kansas City in 1978. He has a special interest in sports medicine and is the team physician for the Kansas City Royals.   He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Chris J. Maeda, MD, Clinical Asst. Professor           

Having received his MD from the University of Michigan Medical School in 1981, and completing his orthopaedic residency at the university of Missouri - Kansas City in 1987, Dr. Maeda went on to do a fellowship in spine surgery at Rancho Los Amigos Medical Center.  He then returned to Kansas City in 1989 and has been actively involved in spine surgery at all three of our hospitals. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Joshua J. Niemann. M.D. Clinical Asst. Professor

A graduate of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, Josh joined our program as a resident in 2002. He then went on to do a trauma felowship in Cleveland before returning to as as staff. He has been a tremendous addition to our faculty and has provided new insight into the treatment of traumatic injuries.

Thomas P. Phillips, MD, Clinical Assoc. Professor            

Dr. Phillips received his MD from Saint Louis University in 1973 and completed his orthopaedic training at the University of Missouri - Kansas City in 1977.   He did a fellowship in orthopaedic pathology at the University of Kansas.  He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Charles E. Rhoades, MD, Clinical Professor
